The bad monkey is great for light OD and clean boost, the ts-9 has better OD, but the pitiful SD-1 really puts out a great OD and pushes a tube amp well once it was modded Changing the clipping style, Ibanez uses symmetrical and Boss uses asymmetrical.. It really screams now Works OK with very clean amps like Fenders, but it's not quite 'there' if you're looking for a tube screamer soundit's very close, but not exact. TS-9: Much more 'linear' gain and level controls. Tends to work with and adapt to the amp it's plugged into instead of coloring the tone like the Bad Monkey. This year I tried a Bad Monkey, thought it sounded better than the CM-2, but sold it to a friend of mine. The pedals don't sound bad, but IMO the distortion on both pedals just sounded synthesized or unnatural to me (like it does not matter what guitar or amp you use) and I just don't feel like that about the OD's I like and use.

Frankly, I don't like DS-1's. They're too fuzzy, compressed, and generic sounding to my ear. The stock Digitech bad monkey sounds terrible. It has a muffled/wooly sound, with an ugly frequency boosted. To make the sound transparent, clear, and "open sounding", you will need to remove the capacitor located at C5. After this, your Digitech Bad Monkey will sound better than a tube screamer. The Bad Monkey REALLY sounds like a vintage TS-808; a lot of the modern T-S type pedals have upped the maximum dirt available way beyond that of the original Tube Screamer, if that’s what you want; look elsewhere. The Bad Monkey actually provides just a tad LESS available “distortion” than an original TS-808.

I ended up building a rig around it and started my first band, the Ronald Raygun, which is still going today.
